Centennial barn renovation
The barn, built in the 1890s, was a part of the Michigan Centennial Farm Program, which recognizes farms that have belonged in a family for 100 years or more and highlights the farm's contribution to the state. Wanting to preserve the history and architecture of the barn, interior renovations to the original hayloft began in 2020.
The original fir floors were removed to reinforce and level the structure. This clean slate allowed for all new utilities, insulation, and subfloor to be added before the white oak floor was laid. The living space is the original hayloft, allowing for an open floor concept with lots of natural light. The space is anchored around the kitchen, designed to accommodate large family gatherings with multiple cooks as well as small dinners for two. New walls add more space for art, a hidden bathroom, and a more private primary suite. The living room opens to an outdoor living space which was also remodeled during this time.
